Our Intent

Our exciting and innovative curriculum provides a stimulating, varied and bespoke course of study that effectively prepares our students to take their next steps in life’s journey. Through our curriculum, we set broad roots in Key Stage 3 that enable students to branch out in Key Stage 4 and 5. At each stage we encourage students to develop a greater understanding of who they are and their place in the world.

Our curriculum is tailored to provide students with an engaging range of subjects, whilst also enabling them to develop cross-curricular skills and understanding. As they grow, our students have a range of opportunities to specialist according to their personal strengths, interests and ambition.

In Key Stage 3, students follow the National Curriculum with an emphasis on cross-curricular skills that develop the expertise students need in all aspects of academic study. Central to this curriculum offer is:

The Arts Project – where all students have the opportunity to perform on stage and to showcase the skills they have developed in creative subjects

Reading – where we foster a love of reading and encourage all students to read as widely as possible

Transition – where we invest in our new students and set high expectations for the future

Year 9 is a transitioning year where we offer a personalised curriculum that includes a wide range of enrichment activities from horse riding to Quidditch. In Year 10 and 11 students study from a wide range of GCSE and vocational subjects and focus on developing expert knowledge in their chosen specialisms.

In the Sixth Form, we offer a vibrant choice of subjects, along with timetabled enrichment, which enables students to further specialise their understanding in a variety of academic fields, leading to university or employment.

Through our curriculum, the core skills of resilience, innovation, mindfulness and employability are threaded in to the very fabric of the school. Extra-curricular activities, enrichments days, period 6, Saturday School, tutor time and activities week all contribute to weaving a rich tapestry that makes the curriculum offer at Kingsmead unique, challenging and relevant.

Our Impact

The impact of our curriculum is vast. It is not only the delivered curriculum but the hidden curriculum. Our focus on producing a caring, aspirant environment of learning in all it's forms. We believe championing and teaching our values alongside the knowledge and skills in lessons build well rounded, adjusted and skilled young people. The evidence for this is seen by the students in our school, as they meet members of the community outside our school and as they succeed in realising their aspirations in their next stage of life. We are proud of our students and what they grow to become. This whole website gives a snap shot of how our curriculum has helped to deliver our overall school vision through our values. This is our press release for the recent KS4 results:

Students and staff at Kingsmead are today celebrating another year of fantastic 2019 GCSE results. These results show a significant improvement in attainment where students at Kingsmead achieve, on average, a higher grade 4+ (well above the old Grade C). These results are particularly pleasing in a year where there has been further volatility in grade boundaries nationally.

Based on provisional results Kingsmead has seen an increase of 8% in 9-4 grades including English and Maths, with further significant improvement of 10% for grade 5 or above in English Language and English Literature where the average grade achieved was a grade 5.

Science have also demonstrated an increase in both grade 4 and 5. The total number of students achieving the EBacc qualification has increased for the third year running by a further 6%.

Maria Mincher, Head of School comments, “We are all so proud of the exceptional achievement of our students. It is a pleasure to see all their hard work and dedication rewarded as they open their envelopes today and we share their excitement for the opportunities their strong results now afford them. Indeed, we are expecting large numbers to return to us in 6th Form next year where we have again this year shown how much value we add to academic outcomes. It is clear that Kingsmead continues to enable students to be the best that they can be through the strong partnerships of our dedicated staff, supportive parents and resourceful governors.”

Our broad academic and vocational subject offer clearly allows students to choose from the many opportunities for further study. Kingsmead School has consistently achieved strong examination results and will continue to build on this achievement.

A special mention should go to Millie Hawkins who achieved nine grade 9-8, Sam Harris eight grade 9-8 and Bryony Parry, Elizabeth Robson and Megan Pee seven grade 9-8 (A**-A*) grades. Well done!

Amongst the top performers were Millie Hawkins (9,9,9,9,8,8,8,8,8,6), Bryony Parry (9,9,9,9,9,8,8,7,7), Sam Harris (9,9,9,9,8,8,8,8,7,7), Elizabeth Robson (9,9,9,8,8,8,8,7,6,6), Megan Pee (9,9,8,8,8,8,8,7,7,7), Abbie Oatley (9,9,9,8,8,8,7,6,5,5), Lucy Hunt (9,9,8,8,8,8,8,6,6), Shannon McGowern (8,8,8,8,7,7,7,7,6), Jacob Straw (9,9,8,8,8,7,7,6,6,6), Luke Woolridge (9,9,8,7,7,6,6,6,5), Sean Chin (9,8,8,7,7,7,7,6,6).

In a national picture where grades 9s are rare we are proud of so many Kingsmead students gaining multiple grades 9s. This shows the continued focus on teaching to the top, challenge and added rigour in classrooms. The more able students at Kingsmead achieve the best grades. These include: Bryony Parry, Sam Harris, Millie Hawkins, Lucy Hunt, Elizabeth Robson, Jacob Straw, Luke Woolridge, Sean Chin, Abbie Oatley, Megan Pee, Mia Sarai, Adam Sowley, Oliver Spruce and Jack Withington.
